For my part, I was just finishing college in ‘95. I had neither the means nor the need for a house at that point. Fast forward to 4-5 years ago, I had my first child on the way and finally the means to buy a family-sized home in a decent school district. Would’ve loved to have waited 5 more years hoping for prices to fall, but my family had to live somewhere.
For my part, I’m fine. My ARM just reset down from 4.125% to 3.25%, I have a home I can enjoy for 30 more years, and the FAZ/SRS I bought a couple weeks ago is shooting through the roof. I’m a happy camper.
But all is not well here in the neighborhood. This is the SF Bay Area, where homes north of $1M are hardly mansions. In the $1M to 1.5M range, these are ordinary family-sized tract homes. My neighbors are 2-income families of professionals (engineers, low-level managers, etc.)
The only homes I’ve seen sell in the past YEAR are REO or short sales where the prices have been dropped hundreds of thousands below what these families paid. The typical buyer would require a jumbo mortgage (currently at about 7% interest) and a 25% down payment. That’s a big change from a few years ago, and not something that most people are going to even attempt when they’re worried about their jobs.
Despite what Larry Kudlow thinks, California is getting worse right now. These REO/short sales are meaningless, because they’re not normal market transactions. Real families are not in the real estate market now, and won’t be for some time. This residential real estate market has much further to fall before any sort of equilibrium sets in, and the Obama plan will do nothing to help this problem.

That and the fact that COP is North America’s biggest refiner. And yes I know that Buffet went from 84 million shares down to 80 million. COP has a big debt, and they are poorly run. But by the upper management will all have retired by the time the oil sands play a significant role in world oil supply.

OK Now back to the market. I need help here. I’m trying to execute a Costanza trade. I want to get long FAS in size.
I want some ideas how and when I should execute this trade. Part of me thinks we’ll get a massive bounce in financials because they are trading like nationalization is imminent. The other part of me is scared to pull the trigger because I see FAS going to $2. I think XLF needs a bounce back to the $9 level to fill the gap from last Friday. A bounce to $9 from current level of $7.55 is around a 20% gain which should result in FAS going up 60% which would take it to $8. The risk is XLF could drop another 25% taking FAS down to $1.25. I don’t want to hold FAS overnight either. What would be the optimum time to get long FAS ? Do I buy the dip, do I buy a reverse ? Its all very confusing to me.

Are the big banks down mainly because there’s no certainty out of Washington or are they really down because they’re busted.
This is what i really don’t get. The two most vulnerable banks BAC and C have a load of bad assets that are ring fenced by the fed. C has 300 billion and BAC has 115 billion. In my mind these banks may be the walking wounded, however they are what seem to me the most protected of the species at the present time. So why the panic? The only reason i see is the threat of nationalization.
Soon, when all the corrupt fund managers are jailed, leaving none; the commodities,health care, banks, and auto industry have been nationalized and in shambles; the government, in total disarray, will call upon me to take charge and solve the crisis. I never said there will be no rallies. That is incorrect. There will be rallies I imagine. What I am saying is we were in a period of consolidation ALL last quarter and NOW we have changed into a downtrend. It is a different market characteristic.
A trend will have minor movements against the main one (down) but it should NOT be whipsaw like we saw. It should be a channel, like the one on my charts but probably wider, that does lower.
Tomorrow should be higher, but the market I imagine wants to move lower with the fewest shorts on board, since most prudent people would have taken some off the table at this point.
That’s our Ottnot… Obama and the Tax Cheat trying to mushroom cloud the economy in less time than Noah’s Flood took out Mesopotamia, but he still makes time for some frontal lobe- assuaging, front page news-obscuring Bush Derangement Syndrome material.

As you had mentioned this was the start of a trend downward this week…tomorrow is Friday and I was just wondering if you thought the momentum was going to keep pushing down till we hit some kind of resistance or did you think today’s drop was sufficient for maybe a 2-3 day rally. Today started out in an upward mode-people said we were oversold, due for a relief…..but quickly began to break down. So I guess the pattern for Friday is more of the same….DOWN. Its hard to get any upward momentum once a down leg starts I guess..
