Former FBI Director James Comey admitted in testimony before the Senate Intel Committee that he leaked the infamous “Comey memo” – his version of what was said during a conversation with President Trump.
Comey’s argument for why the ‘leak’ wasn’t illegal is that the memo consisted of his private notes of a classified conversation, vs. an actual government document subject to classification.
The former FBI Director leaked, he says, in order to try and prompt the appointment of the special counsel.
My judgment was, I needed to get that out into the public square, and so I asked a friend of mine to share the content of the memo with a reporter,” Comey told the Senate Intelligence Committee. “[I] didn’t do it myself for a variety of reasons, but I asked him to, because I thought, that might prompt the appointment of the special counsel –James Comey
