Hurricane Update from Richmond, Virginia

We have gusts of 35 mph and about 2 inches of rain so far. The hurricane should pass by us around 8 p.m. this evening. We already have over 35,000 residents without power in the Richmond metro area. Our fingers are crossed, but since we live in a wooded area, we will probably lose power at some point.

All laundry has been done, coffee has been brewed and stored in a 2 day carafe, and we’ve all had showers. It is very important to have these things already taken care of when power is lost.

Hopefully my iBC brothers in N.J. and N.Y. are prepared or evacuating.

Good luck to all in the path!

Hope the worst of it passes you by, Woody. The pre-brewed coffee is a great tip, as is the shower ahead of the storm. Will make the days ahead more tolerable for all.

    Best regards!

It is coming here to NYC. Thanks for the tip.
It looks like that half of NYC building attachments will be blown off. Keeping my fingers crossed. Candles, radio, water, dry food and old fashion paper books.

Here in a wooded area near Annapolis extended power failure is certain. The main concern is falling trees, either into the house or blocking the only road out. On the positive side, a good summer storm thins out weaker trees and may result in fewer power outages in winter snowstorms.

We had a tree on our house during Isabel, in Sept. of 2003. We have since moved into a new house and the yard has very few trees close to the house. Hopefully we won’t have to deal with that craziness again!

Here’s another pro-tip: Turn down your A/C and make the house very cold. That way when you lose power, at least the first night will not be uncomfortable.

Thanks Nymph! Been through this many times before. I was on CNN back in the 90s when we were evacuated from Folly Beach, S.C. They interviewed us as we were loading up belongings from the beach house.

Hurricane’s can actually be kind of fun as long as no one gets hurt.

For this Calif Girl it sounds so scary. But, it is cool being on CNN. I have heard of Hurricane Parties but that is one kind of party I would probably pass on. How are you holding up? Fly left NY it appears.

It was cool at the time. But I was very young. We weathered the storm in a hot tub about 15 miles inland, until the power went out. Not much fun in a hot tub when the power goes out.

We are holding up fine. The wife and I are up drinking skinny bitches and watching The Social Network. We got very lucky this time. Power is on and no trees down.

    2 day carafe . . . that’s a damn good idea.

The carafe is a bad ass. It keeps coffee hot for 24 hours and warm for 2 days.

I can deal with warm coffee over cold coffee. Definitely picking one of these up before the next disaster.

Not that many strike around here, either.

Here is a VERY important tip from a born and raised Florida boy who has lived on 3 acres for over 20 years now and who has a well for water (and a septic tank).
Get buckets of water ready if you are on a well.
A well requires electricity to run the water pump and if you don’t have electricity you will need to use the buckets, if you know what I mean.
We have used the water from our pool a few times.
Also, feel free to crank up the gas grill. Tuna and peanut butter sucks after awhile.

Been through a few myself down in “America’s Cancerous Growth” aka. Florida. As for coffee…the French Press is invaluable. All you need is grounds and the ability to boil water (camp stove).

    Good luck.

@TC – Filling up the bathtub helps with that “problem” also. Here in Western CT we’re just getting bands of light rain. All of the prep work (except for filling the tubs) have been completed.

Since we’re in a rural area we can be without power for several days during a bad winter storm, so we’re well versed in the routine. It still sucks though.

    Stay safe everyone.

nyc residents, who is staying in skyscrapers going to be in danger. Electricity will be out, no elevators, no water on a higher floors. So, some supermarkets that are below street level will be fill with water. I am in midtown, just on a border from evacuation zone.
Phew. Rats and mice will run up and away from rizing water. NYC has a LOT of them. Just a thought.

I have heard that above 25 floors, the storm increases in strength by 1 category.

Stay safe nikolai. At some point Sunday it will be safe to emerge and I imagine you will have midtown mostly to yourself.

Haha, still here with power! Our neighbor’s tree is down across his driveway, but so far, all we’ve lost is a gigantic rose bush. I can’t believe we haven’t lost power. Almost the entire Richmond metro is without power.

Thanks Colonel! Our neighbors, the ones with the tree across the driveway, runs an inflatable “Moon Bounce” business. Generator galore. I would guess more than 10 and maybe as much as 20. So if things ever got bad enough, we would probably work out a deal. I’ll be sawing his tree up for him in the a.m.

I just heard from a friend in Petersburg, VA that they have 50+ trees down in the city on houses cars and streets. One of his friends lost a car to a 60 foot white pine. I hope you were safe. We are in the thick of it here in western NH, no damage here so far.
