Valleta, Malta is Unreal

valletta_grand_harbour_malta_sunset
I’ve been in Malta for less than 24 hours but I can tell you this; it’s unreal and out of this world. Valletta is a fortified city with 16th century bastion walls which at places reach 60m high… I checked into a penthouse today at Palazzo Prince d’Orange where I’ll be for the next few days; solid spot with great views of the Grand Harbour. If you like old castles, forts and such you’ll love it here like I am so far.

I’m here with two other writers, a lady from Germany and one from Malaysia; solid times. The master of the house is known as Encyclopedia so we all went on a mission today and checked out several sights. Afterwards we had some traditional Maltese cuisine aka not the stuff you get in tourist restaurants but the stuff Grandma used to make.

It was cooked by the gents behind Gululu which is owned by a gent who used to own a popular spot in Valletta. This trip is half organized tours and half free time. Tomorrow I’ve got a tour of some cathedrals followed by a segway tour of town; they look lame but are actually quite fun. Following that it’s sailing as it’s one of the top things to do when you’re here.

The weather is great and like 20 degrees and not too humid. Nice change from London which was cold and grey and also Little Corn which is scorching and humid unless you’re on the breezy side. Tomorrow night is the night before a day off and “Encyclopedia” has the day off so it seems like the perfect time to explore some nightlife; yes?

It’s late and I’m running on adrenaline; click here to check out the post I just wrote filled with photos and infinitely more information than I’m sharing here. Also got a new theme on SHABL; better late than never.

Yes, Dubz – I checked out the SHABL – great pics. I find the shrine of the wrist a little strange..lol!

I’ve read that the crime rate of Malta is low. Is the atmosphere on the streets pretty relaxed?

It’s quite relaxed; today I spent so much time on my iPhone I had that spidey sense I was a target.

Then I realized I was in Malta and went back to being oblivious; there is a reason lots of wealthy Europeans like coming / retiring here.

That wrist is pretty weird indeed.

Hi dubz, I lived in St. Julian for 6 months as a student about 10 years ago. I visited Valleta often. It had open market, though I forgot which day. Great view, great history, friendly people,,, lots great memories. I still keep in touch with my teacher there. Enjoy your stay !!

I started my school in London, then 6 months later I got tired of gray sky and the city. For Londoners Malta is THE vacation place, so I decided to switch to a sister school in Malta. That was a great choice !

Sorry multi messages, but I highly recommend to you to visit Sicily or Tunis if you have a couple days spare. Both very close from Malta, pop on ferry : ), and very interesting cultures.

Nice and heard that is more of the party spot while Valletta is more of an administrative town with a small population.

Just went out for some late night appetizers and drinks; cool scene and love all the limestone.

I don’t have time on this trip as I’m off to Frankfurt on Sunday but I did do Sicily in 2011 and loved it. Went with my mom and once we made it to Taormina, we stopped moving until our flight home.

Speaking of spots; Tokyo is high on my list.

Yes, lime stones and lemon trees… Please visit Kyoto and stop by Tokyo. I’m going back to Tokyo for 2 weeks next month. I’m envy your profession ’cause I love traveling. Life is short, enjoy it !!
