Maybe they’re just trying to find out what happened on Monday. Joe Retirement is going on Google wondering what’s going on with this “crash” they’re hearing about.

Wasn’t it you that mentioned that a whole crop of traders have never been through a market variety correction, so to them, this is a really big deal when in reality it is just a 10%-ish correction?

This is bullish. Market crashes don’t happen when every one is looking for one to happen.

      But, that’s exactly what happened.

Agreed generally, Trent, but think about it … what would be the circumstance in which a crash would occur but articles about it wouldn’t increase? Of course there are going to be articles about a market crash after days like Monday.

In other words, I think the larger question re sentiment is whether there was an elevated volume of articles about a market crash a month ago.

To be clear, I do think the sentiment data Jeff posted about is highly relevant to shorter and medium term moves. I don’t think we’re going to see a crash straight down from here because too many people expect it. Rather, if this is the start of a bear, I expect a retrace back up to around 2000.

These are search trends. The box selected “news headlines” lists various headlines market on the graph with a letter.

Ah, okay — thanks, Jeff. I think my general points still apply (to the extent they are worthwhile … as I noted, I agree that the sentiment picture indicates more upside from here).

Oh, absolutely. Do you find it odd though that we’re reaching 08 extreme levels..which by that point had already endured a 40% price decline?

right now markets are still up ~2% – not a bad day at all…..the question is do we get any more? A few people have predicted “rally” into tomorrow and then Friday a re-test….I think a 2% rally would count, so don’t over-estimate the bullish indicators

I do believe the market is going to try to rally into the close….where to the short sellers show up, or are the gap ups the past two days going to mute the effort?
