What is the best index fund for long term ?
I will put 1/3 of my account, another 1/3 for trade and another 1/3 for cash. Thanks!
Tom, I really like this idea.
Sorry I know I bored you, but I closed last year 20% down, so need to be more cautious myself.
VTI and pick one stock that you like but worth no more than 5% of your total account. I like MSFT for that one stock but I may go IBM while they are down in the dumps.
Tom, not a bad idea.
Look for a low cost index fund or ETF. Vanguad and Fidelity have great choices. Do not go with a mutual fund or actively managed fund. The retail options for these are usually expensive and do not hold up well over the long term.
For that 1/3 of your account, I would do something like 75% stocks and 25% bonds. You can adjust for your risk tolerance. VTI and BND are (index) ETFs that are a good choice. Vanguard has index fund versions. If you want to diversify the stocks, you can split the 75% into VTI, developing markets and emerging markets ETFs. Similarly, you can diversify the bonds a bit.
Or, you can just sign up for Betterment (or WealthFront or Schwab Intelligent portfolios). They will invest in index funds (like I mention above) for a small fee.
General rules: set it and forget it. avoid fees where you can.
Dan, appreciate. I will research around and do it.
Also, this guy has a good, simple perspective on long term index fund investing and retirement planning:

Thanks Dan ! I will check it.
Good to see you changing things up, Tom. Good luck. I’ve got a dividend growth portfolio in my retirement account. Because I can’t watch the market all of the time, I’m down to 2% of my trading account in options. The rest I swing trade stocks with stop and limit orders placed at the same time.
Looking at Motif Investing as a way to create my own mutual fund long-term ideas, but I don’t know anyone who uses that yet.
Thanks Jacked Rabbit. As I get older I have to change my investing/trading style to prepare for retirement seriously.
Grabbed some JCP 7.5 weeklys @ .03 YOLO
GRPN and ANGI are a-hole stocks for me.
+1!
Talk about two shitty stocks. The shit will rise to the top if we go to new highs.
Watch that NQ above 4250. Could be a crazy move in futures.
Never met anyone who uses or has ever used ANGI. By the Costanza trading theory that means it will rocket higher.
+1
I use ANGI almost weekly. Additionally, contractors that I know who subscribe to their daily deals do get a lot of value out of new business. Ratings are pretty accurate as well.
that FDN chart is money. it’s the stocks we trade, and a graphic representation of my account balance for the last year. lol
Guess what the pain trade is. Gap and go higher?
Futures look like they’re getting ready for another leg up here. NQ looks amazing intraday. Really nice consolidation.
Damn if /TF doesn’t have a quick 20 points of upside here.
Crude looks like its ready to roll over
OA I hope you profited handsomely from your OWW call. Beautiful.
ANGI was the trade that started it all last year.
Animal spirits rising
Monster move in BAC. Financials go first if we’re entering a new cycle.
This move is very strong and hard to find any real flaws. I’m going to wait until tomorrows close before making any decisions.
Wall 2.0 Loses again. #Process #timestamp
BBRY getting some love. IWM sneaking up on 118.
closed my NFLX trade. 1030% *drops mic*
haha. awesome
So money dude!
Nice hold!
Nicely done! I’m stil waiting for a 10-bagger.
Ragnar Nutcrusher Morgain got his dick chopped off this week.
OA, what you think of the NMBL chart. Looks like its back to support.
If this is Costanza trading wouldn’t long $AAN be the play?
$EMES looks ripe for a short down to 49/50 Not sure if options are worth it, though.
Wasn’t going to reply and then returned several hours later to give my take .
The next distribution announcement will be in the very near future and should be 1.35~ 1.50 . Annualized (and why not , they are100% sold out for 2015 and HAVE NOT LOWERED PRICES) . IMO this is an excellent long term distribution asset .
As to price you may be correct , however, don’t you think it would be prudent to wait a few days to see (a) distribution and (b) how the stock acts leading up earnings report .
The only reason I replied to your comment is to alert others that may be inclined to look at a very volatile ticker and follow your lead .
OA, would love it if you ran a poll in AH. Just curious after today’s announcement.
Most definitely.
Very boolish poll today. Small group…but very boolish.
Thanks man, about to watch the recording but kind of what I thought which is another reason why I want to wait until tomorrow’s close before makes some decisions.
Looking at PCLN YOLO into the close here. Upside to $1,100.
Does look good – something around 1060/1065?
I just purchased the 1055, 1060, 1065, 1070, 1075 and 1080. Total cost like $600-700. Profit potential of about $20K on a 50 point move.
I picked up 3 1085 calls @.15 I had some spare change in my account that wasn’t allocated
Looks like it’s testing the underside of the previous low. What am I missing here?
Other than the fact that the market has apparently given the green light, I’m not seeing the long opportunity in PCLN, and if anything, it looks like a short candidate to me.
Mind explaining what you see?
It is at previous support levels – agreed, but above that has a thin volume profile – prices basically consolidated at this level today and if the market gaps and goes tomorrow, there is a chance for this to squeeze and gravitate to the next support/resistance level around 1100 Admittedly a long shot, but it is a yolo
Gotcha.
I guess we shall see what happens tomorrow. I took some of the 1030 Puts @ 1.45 on the spike at the open this morning and feel silly for letting them get away from me. Can’t say I was pleased to see it march all the way back to the highs in the last hour after lagging behind all day.
Money has to go somewhere worldwide and it’s going into U.S. assets at a very high clip. I believe we will get follow through buying tomorrow. The indices all look good for further upside. So something has to go up right? I believe PCLN to be a stock that will pop very quickly to about 1085-1100 if it gets going.
The chart looks great. I see an inverse head and shoulder on the hourly on the verge of a breakout. The measured move is 45-50 points from 1050. When PCLN rips it can be an absolute monster.
And yeah the volume profile isn’t bad down here. Plus, if you’re into fib retracements, 1100 is roughly the 61.8% retracement of the latest move down from 1167. Plus we’re coming off the bottom of the channel/wedge (look at the 3 year weekly).
Thanks for the details, QCI. I’m seeing the inverted H&S now. Sometimes I get locked into looking at only a couple time frames and end up misreading a setup.
For the sake of my own position I hope that’s not the case tomorrow 🙂
This exchange is evidence of why this is the best trading site bar none. Kudos to FLY, OA, Darren K_m, QCI et al…
@Darren – looking like you may have the correct positioning right now
Apparently I’m terrible at managing my positions. Had a chance to salvage my position from yesterday with a 50% gain and didn’t take it.
Now I’m having flashbacks from yesterday…
Doug Kass said he was ‘shorting aggressively’ in the post-QE PM. whoops
he can bite down on the pillow then.
Bought JCP 8.5 weekly calls Feb (13) and MSFT next week’s 50 calls earnings YOLO
Told you doing the opposite of what the the troll was pushing was money $$$$$ lol. Hope he keeps it up he is the ultimate timing signak
The only socials worth owning are FB and LNKD.
So iBC is starting off on the wrong foot in 2015, but there is still time to change direction and make some serious cash. Think outside of the box.
GRPN moved more than LNKD and FB combined today.
Think with your other foot, else I will pass you.
I already passed you with my EXK trade but keep trying, you still have a chance.
You took a lot of heat in that trade. Not something I’d brag about, but I suppose that’s what we’re all here for. Peacock the wins.
OA, what if this is 1927? LOL!
http://armstrongeconomics.com/2015/01/22/the-coming-dollar-rally/
I think most similar points in history still suggest a blow off run, which as I’ve always suggested still lasts at least 2 more years. I fear the system 5 years down the road, but at this point it’s not over yet, IMO.
Word
So, if i understand this theory, the search for yield will result in a flow of money into US Bonds, but also the US Stock market. When the dollar gets too high (low yield), money will flow into the “can’t lose” stock market, causing the dollar to crash, but equities to rocket. The drop in dollar will force the Fed to raise interest rates and “contain” the stock market, this will eventually result in the blow-off top that will lead to the next recession.
I see the dots, not sure if they are all connected necessarily, but it is a decent hypothesis.
Short term, would that require some sort of 10-20% correction to make stocks more attractive or is this cycle already in motion?
TWTR is the ultimate social. It’s where all the cool kids are. Just watch.
http://youtu.be/NK2FqPNIT_U
TWTR is for 15-65 yr olds. My kids, the first true internet connected 24x7x365 generation, will be somewhere else doing something cooler. In five years, the landscape will be expanded beyond our imagination, and the best companies to do this are AAPL, MSFT, GOOG, YHOO and FB.
Damn OA that move in KEG huh
The younger generations are done with Facebook. It’s the Millennials and (recently) the parents starting to move into facebook.
The cool kids are playing with Twitter, Instagram,
and snapshot.
Exactly. My wife loves FB and my 13 year old daughter lives on Instagram. She and her friends have no interest in FB.
*snapchat
Stupid autocorrect.
not “snapshot”, but Slapshot. Paul Newman at his 1977 best https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJ2L2SgPldU
BOX IPO priced at $14. Looking to buy this one if it opens under $20.
So -is the pain trade this morning a fade that sucks in bears and gets people out of their positions and then rallies 1% or just the plain fade to keep the bears paralyzed for fear of the snap-back?
Went with AAPL 111 puts at the open @.11
and out at .22 for a quick double (almost) still think this market is trying to trap bears
Went with CLDX Mar 23 at 1.85.Love Bio.Think about it.This country still innovates in this area(uh oh fundies). If you don’t want to pick,FBT good alt. Has many little bio’s in it. BBRY lotto still churning.
Bot more JCP 7.5 calls expiring today @ .02 added to MSFT next week’s 50 calls .07 and bought C 49.5 calls expiring today.
Z for the win! Wow what a sweet move today. Wish I bought more but can’t complain.
nice win! Meanwhile, I’m sitting in some stale PCLN yolos while the world rips.
Is that price on GRPN a typo?
No, I used their service to buy shares at a discount.
