How do we know if we are where it’s at? Tarleton Gillespie explores the controversy over Twitter Trends and the algorithmic ‘censorship’ of #occupywallstreet.
If he suspects censorship, then it was probably due to two things: 1) Twitter will want to do an IPO at some point, so they don’t want to cause problems for the investment banks they may use; 2) Twitter wanted to avoid investigations and additional rules from lawmakers if the OWS activities grew out of control and caused serious problems, partially facilitated by the twitter feeds. Censorship would hide just how effective the twitter coordination was.
