I think Mr. Rather would have been wise to keep his comments to Texas aphorisms and also mild ones like this. Those who succeed on the public stage should understand the long term value of leaving while still looking good. Rather’s lawsuit and other comments were not necessary, in my opinion.

Well setting aside that $100+ bbl oil (inflation adjusted) has precededed every recession since the Eisenhower era, you are missing the point.
You said you would vote for OBAMA over Santorum, perhaps the singularly most stupid move anybody espousing to “life long Republican” status could EVER do.
Santorum could be as dumb as a post and Obama be Stephen Hawking-smart, but that wouldn’t matter. Obama does not believe in our present form of consitutional government. He believes in a system of “positive rights” like the right to redistribute your property against your will.
