Meet Gregory Djerejian, one of Fly’s idiots. He provides a long and thoughtful piece on OWS, closing with:
“While I will readily confess I find it odd as something of a Burkean that I am sympathetic to these protesters, they are not looking to trot out the guillotines, in the main (although I did spot a “Behead the Fed” sign!), but rather, they have smelled the radicalism of the blows dealt the integrity of a representative democratic system poised by the almost unfettered oligarch-like behavior among too many elites wholly disconnected from, yes, the 99% they speak of. They are acting to secure conservative aims of re-balancing a society that is becoming dangerously unmoored and increasingly bent asunder. They want accountability and dignity and prospects. Their leaders have failed them. So they have taken to the street to lead themselves.
      http://www.belgraviadispatch.com/2011/10/occupy_wall_street.html

I have to say, though, that he doesn’t seem to fit either the general definition of idiot or a more OWS-specific definition:

“Gregory Djerejian is Senior Vice President and General Counsel of a diversified asset management firm, particularly active in commercial real estate, hotel & resort development, company mergers and acquisitions, and alternative investments. While with the company, he has had leading roles in numerous strategic transactions, across multiple industries and sectors. In this position, he has been based in Geneva, London, and New York City. He also manages a philanthropic organization focused on assisting the citizens of Armenia, through projects in the health care sector, below‑market loans to a wide spectrum of companies, and educational grants.

Previously Mr. Djerejian worked as a corporate lawyer in New York City and Paris focused on project finance, securities and M&A transactions. He also served in various foreign and humanitarian policy roles with the U.S. Refugee Resettlement Office, International Rescue Committee, and as a consultant to the Bosnian Federation on the Train and Equip Program, in collaboration with the U.S. State Department.

He currently serves on the Board of Directors of Lyford Group International, a global macro strategy hedge fund based in New York and the Vietnam Property Fund, a London Stock Exchange listed company focused on making investments in the real estate sector in Vietnam. He has also served on various non-profit boards.

Mr. Djerejian is a graduate of Phillips Academy (Andover), has a BSFS from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service, as well a JD from Georgetown University Law Center and MBA from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Business. Djerejian is fluent in French and conversant in Spanish and Russian. He was admitted as a term member to the Council on Foreign Relations and is a member of the New York State Bar.”

Unfortunately going out and arguing with vagrants on the street does not defeat the point of view of the movement. Furthermore it doesn’t matter if the money comes from financial firms or companies like Monsanto.

Now onto some of his points:

The reason the United States exported in the 1950s was not because they had more capital because the rest of the world had just finished BOMBING THE FUCK OUT OF EACH OTHER. Furthermore, the idea of “free trade” and “globalization” were new at that point in time, meaning the concept of shifting capital to areas with cheaper labor was less plausible. Security issues also were a hinderance in the mobility of capital.

Furthermore why is it a good argument: “You should angry at Washington because they made it possible for to cheat and steal via a manipulated market, I mean sure I did it you would have too, and then bailed us out because we give them so much money and threatened economic apocalypse.”

He also got absolutely OWNED on the slavery point, government ended it not the slave owners profiting from it – corporations were 100% for slavery at that time, as any profit maximizing corporation would be.

Also completely owned on the Steve Jobs point – outsourcing jobs as a form of environmental and wage arbitrage is profit maximizing behavior. The only way competitive firms price in negative externalities is via regulations (EPA… etc) that create a price for these externalities. Allowing them to negate this price by outsourcing is how we lose jobs and fuck the environment simultaneously.

I like that he acknowledged that he was misinformed when he claimed they were anti-capitalist and I hope that claim is now firmly laid to rest and we can stop calling the OWS crowd communists, be content with vagrants, and consider their points.

      very well put.

Overall there is a frustration in America that must be released.

Capitalism is the best system, BUT it must be tethered with humanity and care for all its citizens. Some people will call this socialism, but in reality it is every bit of capitalism as the sum is only as strong as its parts.

Without some forms of socialism we would not be the country we are today.

Socialistic programs should not be dismantled or torn down because inept policymakers can not control spending.

Corporations are not inherently evil, but some men in high places are.

Government should not be a revolving door for corporate insiders to favor their constituents. Nor should these people be allowed to lower the bar for their corporate buddies to rape and pillage both people and environment alike.

Furthermore, we should only have supported the banks to prevent depression, but never socialized the losses.

Party ob OWS protesters…just get your message across with some intelligence.

Capitalism is a motivator, when you remove this motivation for exceptionalism you get mediocrity and laziness. Socialism encourages this mediocrity and laziness by enabling individuals with a means to an end. That being money for survival.
I’ve read several articles today about how a new immigration law in Alabama has helped cause a shortage of agricultural workers in Alabama. There are jobs available but nobody wants to do them. Why would someone on government assistance making enough of entitlements not working at all pick up a shovel and go to work? That’s the problem, and it will only grow going forward.

And why wouldn’t you conclude that the pay is too low?

Also completely overlooks the fact that you are unable to pay the health bills incurred from this sort of work (think exposure to heat, hard labour, poison in the form of pesticides and fertilizers) on the wage you are paid for it. But don’t worry, it is much easier to just call people lazy and not think.

capitalism is a motivator and socialism can create a lazier society, but both in its purest forms makes for a society that collapses upon itself.

capitalism produces both hardship and success for society. socialism seeks to smooth out the rough edges.

seriously passi’ is it better to just throw money at people via social assistance or would it be better to help reproduce a productive citizen ?

in japan they give you assistance, financially speaking, but also require and help you to learn a new trade or career….free of charge.
the society has a vested interest in seeing you back into society as a productive member.

that is what our great system needs. a little compassion. instead we end up with politicians quibbling over nonsensical bills and laws that amount to little more than getting you sympathy or belief system to vote for them.

that is not to say all policy makers are useless and concerned only with votes. there are indeed people who want to change things for the better.

lastly, and most importantly we do not live in a free market capitalistic system. if we did then we would not be having this discussion. capitalism and the free market system would have wrung out the excess and bad apples. risk would be allowed to fail.

both sides of the aisle hang socialized risk and loss. they also have been influenced by money for campaign to vote along lines that end up not being beneficial for the society at large.

given a chance i would not be surprised to see capitalism revert back to the working conditions at the turn of the century.

Slavery Was universal. It was not a product of capitalism, it existed since biblical times. The Egyptian pharaohs owned jews.
Slavery is not an american trait, americans inherited slavery after the declaration of independence, and europeans BOUGHT african slaves that were slaves to other africans.
American inherited the injustice and only AFTER being free from a high tax oligarch and economic growth through capitalism, could society be rich enough to free slaves without massive famine such as the one that lead to the tea party and economic rioting leading to the revolution, and only after that could blacks eventually be given equal rights.

Capitalism is what made it possible for a law to be passed to free slaves and reduce child labor laws. At one point in history for quite some time (caveman days) you could not produce enough food for more than a small tribe to eat and that was only if he worked all day for food. No amount of wealth distribution of cavemen could make him richer, and if half the society said “you go get me food” wealth (measured in food) and eventually population would have to get reduced in half. Slavery existed because of the desire for OTHER PEOPLE to do the work FOR the rest of society. Taxes and bailout is the modern day manifestation of the desire to have others work for the rest of society. Today because of prosperity gained through capitalism, we no longer need slavery and even some can just play the “pity” card. Generosity and compassion exist without government but government programs create complacency, and the excess taxes on the company means that there not only is less of a need, but there’s less of an ability and worse the attitude is harbored that “It’s the government’s role to give to charity and I already give to them”. Thankfully there are tax breaks to encourage compassion. (I am in favor of some* taxes if tax breaks are used properly as an incentive for people to produce businesses in areas the government cannot.)

Socialistic programs are only possible due to the fruits of the labor of capitalism. Population boomed when oil started being used because it resulted in the increase of production of goods and it could support richer lifestyles due to capitalism.

American exceptionalism is a product of the industrial revolution and was inspired by men like Henry Ford, Thomas Edison and the brilliance of Nikola Tesla. The wright brothers may have invented planes, but it took capitalism to commercialize flight so that it was accessible to nearly all.

Slavery was originally neither legal nor illegal under government. But if they honored the true words of the constitution “freedom and justice for all” the 10% of the workforce that were slaves would not have been. The founding fathers built that into the constitution and the founders were in favor of economic freedoms which could then support social freedoms.

Slavery existed because it was cheaper to use slaves to pick cotton than it was to pay Americans the wage they demanded to pick cotton.
“Capitalists” (i.e. early owners of capital) during the industrial revolution made it possible to create organized labour, mandatory safety standards, minimum wage and laws against child labour by DOING all of the above things in great excess, abusing the working population until they braved clampdowns from both hired goons, police and in some famous cases the army to cause people to stand up, take notice and enact the laws requiring employers to change their methods. Does that sound familiar in a modern context?Perhaps read your history a little closer if you are going to use it to support your points.
