He’d certainly fit in with that crackpot populist nonsense that calls for making the Executive a virtual dictator and establishing yet another bullshit National Bank controlled by politicians and not regulated by the free markets.
Yeah, Ratigan, that Executive Branch Bank doling out sub-market loans without market constraint or oversight oughtta REALLY clean up Washington.
the government played an unsung role, except by a few notable commentators on the web, in creating the big housing bubble… I frequently regret that I find myself at odds with them over government/econ issues, because I am so with them on that point.
nice read. I agree with everybody who is anti bank and anti wall street and anti financialization and pro small biz and everything… which tend to seem to be conservative persons affiliated with austrianesque economic views.
But… either widespread default and a deflationary depression or substantial government deficits and aid are going to be needed to end the mess we are in. Fiscal aid and aid more directly aimed at the average joe… And thats how its going to end. Governments will capitulate if brought to the brink and create the currency needed to stabilize things, I just hope they do it sooner rather than later. 🙂
I’m not saying there isn’t corruption in Washington… of course there is, they allow themselve to SPEND $3 Fuggin Trillion Dollars a YEAR!
What do you think that’s going to bring forth from the marshes? White fluffy kittens?
What idiot Rant Man is missing is not that “corporations” are “corrupting Washington” (which is bullshit, as corporations are more like tributaries to the Roman Emperor than they are “bribers” of anyone) but that the amount of our tax dollars and borrowing that flows through DC each and every year is what’s corrupting it.
Let’s face it– and don’t take this as “support” of this fascist process, because it’s not — if
a Fortune 1000 company DOES NOT solicit Washington on bended knee, they are giving up significant competitive advantage via taxpayer funded rents.
You want to stop politicians from “being corrupted” by lobbying money, Dylan?
THEN LIMIT SEVERELY CONGRESS’S (and the EXEC’s) ABILITY TO GRANT FAVORS THROUGH THE TAX AND REGULATORY CODES.
Because like the fucking famous Willey Sutton once said, he robbed banks “because that’s where the money was.”
They should be spending more, or, rather and far more preferably, taxing people less. Deficit spending by the government creates dollars / is “money printing”, and while I know we don’t agree on this, is also exactly what we need. We have too much debt, and without large deficits from the government (inflationary all other things equal, but its a generally deflationary environment) or widespread defaults/restructurings (deflationary) the situation will persist.
Government aid like QE isn’t actually inflationary, as it doesn’t put any money into the hands of consumers…
So, while I generally despise politicians and I mean that most sincerely, and on almost all points we agree… We are distinctly lucky to have the deficits we have had over the last few years.
I agree with Jake. My view- put billions of dollars someplace where it can be spent by a few hundred people and no doubt other people will arrive to get a piece of it. It is very American and logical for people to go after money, and there is a massive amount of it in DC, available at the stroke of a pen. How would you like a 100 million dollar piece of business?
I kid, but in all honesty – money in politics means that the people will never be represented properly. It is as simple as this, will you represent the person who pays for your campaign or will you try to keep your promises?

He is dead on that money has corrupted politics while partisans do their best to distract.
I am astonished that you don’t see the problem with allowing corporations (and other large organizations) to buy support to cover their sins.
WTF are you talking about?
