Just Nothing Happening

We’ve been churning nowhere for months now. It’s getting real boring. BAS and HCLP clobbered me on Monday but they were up so much, I’m still – still – ahead. That’s almost unbelievable, but it’s true.

So I’m doing what I always do when I’m bored and trying to avoid getting real work done. I’m running around Twitter throwing things at various political groups, because it’s entertaining.

Naturally, the 9th floor is a good ol’ boys club, replete with both whiskey and hunting rifles (best combination ever). Reading some of the flagrantly unfair “studies” being published by Bloomberg’s sprawling anti-gun fetish, I can completely see why the NRA opposed any gun studies being published with taxpayer money. Having nothing would still be more useful to the public than what’s coming out right now.

How do you squeeze 70+ school shootings in one year onto a map? Simple: just pretend like things that obviously aren’t school shootings are actually school shootings.

Thankfully, the disinformation campaign seems to be having zero effect. American’s have never been more opposed to treating violent crime as an excuse to restrict gun liberties, and I frankly couldn’t be happier about it.

The funny part for me is you can’t even prove a direct causal relationship between gun owernship and mass shootings.

Just look at Switzerland, every citizen is required BY LAW to own, and be trained in the opperation of, an automatic rifle/carbine. How many shootings do they have?

Switzerland has much fewer gun homicides than the US. They do also have much more than, say, the UK or other more restrictive gun cultures.

What seals it for me is the difference in violence rates. Gun deaths in the UK may be fewer than the US, but violent crime as of 2009 was ALMOST 4X GREATER. Over 1,200 people per 100,000 is a victim of violent crime in the UK. That compares to just over 400 per 100,000 in the US. And that holds EU wide.

France, Luxemburg, Netherlands, Finland, Canada, Belgium, Sweden, Austria and the UK are all EU countries with much higher rates of violent crime than the US.

You can’t just address gun violence in a vacuum. How is it a comfort to me that there are fewer gun deaths in the US if the trade off is a 300 pound gorilla trying to crush my skull with a brick.

I am by no means an overtly physical person. I was mildly athletic when I was much younger. That was my peak – now I’m soft with a little too much fat around the middle. I’ll take the guns knowing the alternative is that “only” the most violent physically fit can be successful criminals. Particularly when a corollary is that available victims are much more plentiful in the later situation.

Sorry, meant to write “Western countries”. Canada is obviously not an EU country

Ultimately it comes down to the fact, that for all the supposed ‘authority’ of the government, we are all men and women and I am extremely uncomfortable with one group of people saying “we have the right to carry guns for your protection” while denying the other group the right to carry guns for their own protection.

But I’m just a fringe lunatic anyways 😛

You live in a bubble of simplicity within a complex world.

      ottnott, welcome back.

So at best you’re fighting that these EU countries have violence rates twice as bad as the US? Per that article?

      Okay

No, Cain. I’m arguing that comparisons based on reported crimes are useless. That is true even after trying to correct for varying definitions of crime in different countries.

According to stats of reported crime, for example, Iceland is the most crime-ridden country and crime rates are 8X higher in the US than in Columbia.

When you wander off the reservation, as you have with Tesla financials, the Obamacare numbers, and, here, violent crime numbers, you end up making a lot of moronic statements with fierce certainty.

Ottnott, one of the things I love so much about you chiming in is I can usually take every argument you’ve made here, twist the direction, and send it back at you while completely reversing the conclusion.

          For example:

How can you be certain that the US crime rate is so bad relative to the rest of the world if none of the comparisons are worth anything?

I have not wandered off the foundation with Tesla financials. The core of my dislike for the stock is based on very simple to understand reasons. In fact, plenty of my criticisms have been brought against Tesla by other people who live and work “in the daylight”. In fact, even though it looks like my bet will expire worthless, your criticism is worth jack shit on this matter.

I work on PPACA every single day, so you’ll pardon me for thinking your opinion is also completely worthless. That’s the benefit of having 6 month out renewal data at your fingertips.

But thanks for nothing. Stop by again some time.

“I have not wandered off the foundation with Tesla financials. The core of my dislike for the stock is based on very simple to understand reasons.”

LOL. You made piles of ignorant statements about Tesla’s sales and financials in your “Tesla’s Sales are a Ruse” post.
            http://ibankcoin.com/mr_cain_thaler/2013/05/15/tesla-sales-are-a-ruse/

Want to go back and review how your “concerns” have panned out with Tesla?

And, it would be plain embarrassing if I had to go over your PPACA post and eviscerate your nonsense about the reinsurance issue — your area of claimed expertise. You sure you want that? I’d start by pointing out that you left something important out of the American Hospital Associations concerns about the reinsurance fund.

“All in all, I very much question whether Tesla sold any real cars.”

Oh, and on the topic at hand, you ask:

“How can you be certain that the US crime rate is so bad relative to the rest of the world if none of the comparisons are worth anything?”

Numbskull. I’m not the one expressing certainty about what the crime rate is in the US versus the rest of the world. That was you:
“What seals it for me is the difference in violence rates. Gun deaths in the UK may be fewer than the US, but violent crime as of 2009 was ALMOST 4X GREATER.”

I’m the one pointing out how unhelpful the reported-crime data is for comparing real crime in different countries, drawing attention to the absurdity of letting reported-crime data lead one to believe that the US had 8X the crime rate of Columbia.

Do you read what you write?
