“The pastor also said President Andrew Jackson’s name should be removed from nearby Jackson Park, because he also was a slave owner. He said he’s not necessarily asking the city rename the parks altogether. He suggested Washington Park could be named after former Mayor Harold Washington, and Jackson Park could be named after civil rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson or singer Michael Jackson“.
“I am feeling ambivalent that I would have to walk my child, attend a parade or enjoy a game of softball in a park that commemorates the memory of a slave owner,” he wrote. “Therefore, I call on the immediate removal of President George Washington and President Andrew Jackson names from the parks located on the southeast side of Chicago. They should not have the distinct honor of being held as heroes when they actively participated in the slave trade.”
The sculpture was designated a Chicago Landmark on September 15, 1971.

Democratic Congressmen have approached the US Army at Fort Hamilton to rename streets that are named after Confederate officers. Their answer was no. Here is the Army’s reply:
“After over a century, any effort to rename memorializations on Fort Hamilton would be controversial and divisive,” Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff Diane Randon wrote in the letter Clarke received last weekend. “This is contrary to the Nation’s original intent in naming these streets, which was the spirit of reconciliation.”
What people are ignoring is that these officers who fought in the civil war on both sides are amongst the most honourable in American history. The Mexican-American war that led to the acquisition of the western United States territory from Texas to the Pacific Ocean included Robert E Lee, Ulysses S Grant, William T Sherman, George W McClellan, Stonewall Jackson and Jefferson Davis.
General Winfield Scott, who the Duke of Wellington praised as the ‘Greatest Living Soldier’, said that Robert E Lee was the finest officer he had ever commanded. Lee was the Commandant of West Point at the onset of the Civil War.
These men form the very foundation of our military. But now our history and our honour will be decided by an ignorant, low IQ mob if we give them half a chance.
