The VIX has closed between 27 and 33 for the last 27 trading sessions. As the market made new monthly lows, the VIX stayed within this range. The volatility is coiling around the 30 level, and the range has gotten narrower on the VIX over the last 3 weeks. I would look for a break from this range on the VIX for confirmation on a move either way. People are nervous right now, but not scared. Will this give way to fear, or complacency in the markets?

I read an interesting statistic this morning from the Sentiment Trader. Going back to 1940, there have been 14 instances of the market recording a new 3 month high within a couple of weeks of recording two 90% down days. We had 90% down days on 6/15 and 6/22 within close proximity to a new 3 month high. 100% of the time the market has traded higher 3 months later, using this scenario. The Sentiment Traders short term outlook is neutral. He also said the Golden Cross bears no statistical significance unless you go out 1 year. 74% of the time when the 200 day is declining when a Golden Cross occurs the market trades significantly higher one year later.

Look at that. We closed a fraction above the top component of the golden cross on a fed day. Holy shit! I have no idea what this means, except that I should immediately go get a fucking Slurpee because the heat index is fucking 125 degrees.

In other news, the USA is beating the best soccer team in the world right now, 2-0 on ESPN with 15 minutes to play.

    USA! USA! USA!

  2. JakeGint says:

    Yeah, we won didn’t we?

Kid who works for me went to Wharton, which ensures he has lots of Europhag friends from school, who are already calling up and charging FIFA conspiracy.

    No FIFA conspiracy…

…but it was one of those classic football scenarious where 1 team (Spain) dominates the entire game yet makes 2 schoolboy errors in the back and concedes on both occasions, while failing to make good on a host of chances at the other end.

Lost in all the “shocking upset talk” is the fact that for the 3rd time in 4 games, a USA player was sent off for a stupid/reckless challenge (this time it was the coach’s SON, for crying out loud). Can’t be doing that shit constantly and expect to win.

  4. JakeGint says:

What does the mean “sent off of a reckless challenge?”

Did he challenge a mustachioed Spaniard to a duel, wot?

    __

  5. DPeezy says:

In soccer, to “challenge for the ball” is to try to take/tackle the ball away from the opposition.

The reckless part in this case was the American player, Bradley, jumping into the challenge (and the Spaniard’s ankles) with both feet and studs showing.

  6. Gunners says:

that challenge was a little strong, but not a red card, imo. yellow sure, but i thought it was only one foot he went in with and he was clearly going for the ball, not the player

i can’t believe we won though, we look so bad out there almost all the time

  7. DPeezy says:

    Mr.Gunners! Good to see ya.

Honestly, I was surprised by the red as well, but they’ve been calling it close the entire tournament. Clark (I think) was sent off against the Italians (?) for a very similar tackle. The players need to adapt to the referees, regardless of what they themselves might deem a red card.

Of course, that’s just another shortcoming for coach Bob Bradley…along with insisting on still playing old farts like Bocanegra and Mastroeani.

  8. I.G. says:

The challenge was well deserved. A red card in any decent game.

I won’t lie — I’m still bitter about the whole thing.
