Yeah, This Oughtta be Great for Unemployment!

Sometimes watching the Pelosi controlled Congress is like watching a late season filler on“The CW.   You know the sort– base, corn comedy, most of it recycled from better stuff in the past, but mildly entertaining as filler for the beer and cheeze doodle half hour.   Unfortunately, this is real life, and the stuff  Congress is producing these days isn’t mindless entertainment for the subliterate masses, but toxic fiats that will kill off whatever fluttering hopes our economy might still retain after this recent hideous downturn.

Case in point, this latest howler from  FLORIDA Democrat Representative Alan Grayson  (word to my boys Chivas, TC and Cash n’ Guns, whatsupwitdat?).   Congressman Grayson claims that what we need to “stimulate the economy” again, this time with  mandatory paid vacations.   Read the whole article here.

Yeah, in this economy I could see strapped businesses being all for paying their employees to hit the beach, Rep. Grayson.   I can just hear the small business owner now:

“Mandatory vacation?   Hmmmm… let me think a second.   I tell ya what… why don’t you just take the rest of the year off?”

You just earned my Asshat of the Month, Congressman.

Following is an excerpt from the article (hat tip to The Politico):

Congressman: We’re going to Disney
By: Erika Lovley
May 21, 2009 04:28 AM EST

Rep. Alan Grayson was standing in the middle of Disney World when it hit him: What Americans really need is a week of paid vacation. So on Thursday, the Florida Democrat will introduce the Paid Vacation Act — legislation that would be the first to make paid vacation time a requirement under federal law.The bill would require companies with more than 100 employees to offer a week of paid vacation for both full-time and part-time employees after they’ve put in a year on the job. Three years after the effective date of the law, those same companies would be required to provide two weeks of paid vacation, and companies with 50 or more employees would have to provide one week. The idea: More vacation will stimulate the economy through fewer sick days, better productivity and happier employees.“There’s a reason why Disney World is the happiest place on Earth: The people who go there are on vacation,” said Grayson, a freshman who counts Orlando as part of his home district. “Honestly, as much as I appreciate this job and as much as I enjoy it, the best days of my life are and always have been the days I’m on vacation.”According to the Center for Economic and Policy Research, 28 million Americans — or about a quarter of the work force — don’t get any paid vacation. The center says that a lack of vacation causes stress and workplace burnout and that those evil twins cost the economy more than $300 billion each year.

One more if-you’re-reading-this-then-you’re-probably-not-on-vacation fact: The United States is dead last among 21 industrial countries when it comes to mandatory R&R.

France currently requires employers to provide 30 days of paid leave.

Grayson is a whacked out leftist attorney who basically won because people voted against Ric Keller, the incumbent.
I can’t believe Central Florida people would have voted for a nut like Grayson if they knew who he was. The only thing the voters knew was that Keller lied about term limits and liked junkets.
We can’t seem to get good people to run so we are screwed.

Some would have you believe it matters not whom we elect.

Of course, I would contend this is from people who get their political input from, well, People.

TC — sounds to me like you’ve been called to service, then.

    C’mon, you’re a lawyer, and they’ll probably allow you to daytrade intra-session.

You struck a nerve here. Vacations are for resting and refreshing valued employees. Also for getting dickhead employees that you just can’t fire, without some fuckhead going to bat for them for more money, out of your air space for a week.
The law is very clear on the matter, it’s beyond fair and I don’t need another fucking law.
    Thanks Jake I feel better!

I’ve got a few Jacksonian questions for you Jake:
-What sort of money managemenet strategy do you use for the Jacksonian portfolio?
-If your thesis plays out and all the JC holdings continue to rise, do you simply keep trimming them on the way up?
-Do you add to the laggards in the group or cut them?
-What will you do if the dollar gains strength? Cut losses, or add to your positions?

Thanks for all the hard work Jake.

This nation has come to expect so little from our elected reps it is frightful and may well be our downfall. Part of the problem is that they are almost all lawyers and as such they have no real experience with science, technology, the military, economics or anything else that is relevant to running a country.

Jake..i have mixed feelings about these idiots..part of me is happy because it reaffirms thesis that precious metals and commodities will be place to be as they destroy the dollar…but other part of me is sad as they are destroying what made America great…if they keep this up this will become like Europe

First, let me reiterate that the JCHP is not a daytrading or even a swing trading strategy. When I said that most of these stocks should be held for the duration of this recession, I meant it. And some further, as even after the recession we will likely have inflation. That said I will try to answer:

What sort of money managemenet strategy do you use for the Jacksonian portfolio?

For the most part I sell calls against positions that I think are temporarily overvalued. As an example, I recently sold calls against TSO and TBT. Otherwise, I “keep an eye” on most of these with the threat of expulsion if they start behaving too poorly — NRP came close last week, but got the warning and strode back this week.

-If your thesis plays out and all the JC holdings continue to rise, do you simply keep trimming them on the way up?

I will begin trimming them when I see them catching on in the general investing sphere, and becoming overbought. Thus far, that hasn’t happened. I will also sell calls on temporary spikes.

-Do you add to the laggards in the group or cut them?

I have been adding to the laggards in the PM section over these last few weeks, but am almost full up. I may add one or two names that have served me well outside the JCHP — namely EGO or GG or both.

-What will you do if the dollar gains strength? Cut losses, or add to your positions?

The dollar gained strength along with gold last year. I’m not too worried about the dollar gaining strength, but again, we’ll see what happens.

RHill — I am not too interested in “being proven right” with regard to the creeping Europanization of this country.

I’m much more interested in stopping these fools before they make the place unliveable for free people.

Not all Alan Grayson’s bills are bad. I rather like this idea.

SMB — That’s a good start, but I’d rather he introduced a bill to dismantle the Fed.

It’s the only Jacksonian way, after all.
