We chilled at HollyHood last night till late. I can’t believe this was the first time I’ve been there. Reminded me a lot of Times Square, but slower and more laid back. The street performers weren’t that great, but shopping there was pretty good (the workers AND customers in Victoria’s Secret were very helpful to me and my buddies). The food in the area is pretty good too. We checked out this place called uWink and they have this interesting concept… touchscreen menus. It’s pretty sick. You can play games and stuff with your friends on a computer at your table. Basically, you replace an angry unhelpful waitress with a robot that gets you what you want. Do we tip? Well, we didn’t really actually eat there, but I’ll have to try it one day.
Where we did eat was Pinks. All I can say is daaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyymmmmmmmmmmmmmm. The line was quite long. Maybe about 80 people or more. Stood in line for about 45 minutes for a hotdog, and finally got our dogs after 11pm. But the novelty was worth the wait.
One last thing… Universal studios and Hollywood was very very empty. I kind of like it like that, but I guess you can feel the economic squeeze a little. Oh yeah, and everyone everywhere was wearing Laker jerseys. Hellzyeah.

Ah, uWink. I’d forgotten about them. Atari founder Nolan Bushnell’s attempt to reinvent the Chuck-E-Cheese concept of food+games, but for the upscale adult market. Think “swanky cocktail bar with artsy touchscreen tables and trivia/finger-painting games that encourage people to talk to each other” instead of the Dave & Buster’s “Chuck E. Cheese with beer” concept.
The technology’s finally there; the question was whether or not the audience is there. Do the sorts of people who go to funky cocktail bars and restaurants really want interactive touchscreen tables? (And if, one of these years, such a thing becomes fashionable, how does a restaurant/bar operator hedge against it suddenly being deemed unfashionable next year?)
For purely sentimental reasons, I wish it had taken off. A lot of 30somethings had wonderful childhoods thanks to his first business, and it’d be nice to see him strike gold again.

i would definitely chill at uWink. they just need to add more flashy lights, and add poker or something.
yup… AND customers. i was standing in line, and all i did was touch a bottle of lotion and half the girls in line started making comments about which one I should get, how its so cheap yadayadayada.
