Stocks for September…

Spent my Sunday evening getting ready for September.  This is what I enjoy about swing trading.  You actually don’t have to do too much research everyday… you shouldn’t!  If you’ve just started out trading stocks I would recommend that you monitor only a few stocks, maybe about 20, but within that 20, pick a “priority list” of about 5 stocks.  You may have heard me mention something like, “I have CSIQ on high priority BUY”… that simply means I will be dedicating most of my time a resources to track that stock and make the trade.  The result?  A nice double digit gain within the next few trading days.  It sure beats just sitting on a boring stock that you picked up on a stock tip in the steam room.   I’ve been able to pick a small group of stocks just before they make big moves.  My favorites in June include FUQI, CSIG, CYOU, CTIC.  This month I have found a few more gems that I will add to my universe of about 20 stocks I keep an eye on for swing trading.

Previous HOT stocks that are still sizzling:

  • FUQI (now #1 on the IBD 100… remember, The PPT picked this as a #1 stock way before!  Several times it hit #1 on PPT).
  • CSIG – Remember Cninsure from last month?  It’s now at #6 on the IBD 100.  I beat them too that.
  • CYOU  – still like the revenue potential in the internets over in China.  It seems like a “beat-down” play when you go back  to the .Com era, but its much different in China.

New! And for the brave:

  • AIRM … I’ve been bullish on medical stocks for a while now, giving much praise to creative companies like AFAM, weird China stocks like CMED.  Currently the group’s rating is low, which means we should expect a pullback in the sector.  I think AIRM is worth buying on that dip.
  • SWM-  If you’re into killing the bears, then get long SWM.  This stock is gettin ready to bust to the 55, then 60s level.  Don’t need to chart this, it reminds me too much of GMCR.
  • GOK – Ever sine Geokinetics released their 10-q on August 7, some people started buying up this stock.  I’m not sure what’s going on here, but it’s worth to keep an eye on:  http://www.geokinetics.com/Quarterly_reports.html
  • LINC – an old new favorite of mine, that is back on the list.
  • NFLX – will try to short on pullback
  • ARST- back on high priority buy.  More of a technical trade as it has completed its consolidation period right at its weekly moving average.  Wedge pattern is getting narrow signalling big move coming up.

Well, that’s all I came up for now.  Most of the stocks I traded and monitored in August are still high up on my watchlist.  I plan to add to this current list whenever I see more stocks make big moves on The PPT.  I finally got the pictures from a my friend’s camera from the Black Eye Peas party, I’ll post them up later.  Boom boom pow!

    Hey Gio,

Great post!!!! i think your watch list is pretty kick-ass. the equity which stood out to me the most to me was ARST, which is a high buy priority on your watch list for a technical trade. It has consolidated nicely and i think it is due for a nice run up sometime soon too, if we can get it over the 20 dollar mark then its a sure buy.. Also with the market taking a nose dive today, this one is up and still looking good at these levels.

    Have you purchased any ?

          Cool.

I had to put a password protect on my last post because I did a private review on a new product called StockTwits Desktop. If it was public, then one of those googleBots would have picked it up. I’ll put the post up midnight Hawaii time if Fly gives me the okay.

    – AIRM will be awesome. Just waiting for volume to pick back up.

what up Pope. i’m thinking NFLX is getting a lot of competition with streaming media technology getting better. Intermediate target is 35.

Speaking of streaming media I got heads up from old friend few months ago who helps run a small cap fund on SNIC. So far so good.

At first I said – “you mean the Roxio company?”. They feel that although Apple will be #1 in streaming media that SNIC will have a big chunk of the rest of the market. I will attach some of CEO interview that explains it better than I can. Anyway, it kind of goes along with short NFLX theme as hard disc market will probably disappear and people may not pay as much for electronic delivered media. NFLX will become online service only, probably for less monthly fees. They already offer 10000 movies in streaming format.

TWST: What do you believe will be the significant developments or changes in your sector over the next few years, and what strategies will you put into place to respond?

Mr. Habiger: I think the fundamental shift will be that consumers are going to have any movie available, for the most part, wherever they would like and on any device. So what you’ll find is that the technical limitations of delivering a movie to a screen – whether on your PC, phone or television – will be overcome, and we will be left with some contractual legacy issues based on how studio contracts may have been done. Ultimately, the consumer will benefit from a much more efficient, direct way of consuming and receiving that content. So we certainly believe that this fundamental shift will take place in the next year or two, and there will be clear winners and losers in what’s described as a $56 billion a year industry worldwide. The sale and rental of DVDs is a relatively inefficient way to deliver a movie. For example, some plastic pellets are delivered to a plant somewhere in the world, from which a dish is pressed. In turn, the number of movies to be made is determined, and they are shipped and distributed to many stores all over the world. Next, you get in your car, go the store and buy that piece of plastic, take it home and put it into your television or DVD player, and then you can turn it on. It’s not a very efficient way to consume content that could be delivered more cost effectively to the studio as well as provide a much better experience for the customer.

TWST: Would you tell us how Sonic Solutions’ client space is changing? What are some of the dynamics there, and what are you doing to meet their needs?

Mr. Habiger: Our customers are ultimately the consumer electronics company, PC manufacturer studios and also the layperson – the consumer who wants to watch a movie. The changes that we’re seeing are relatively clear: Consumers are getting comfortable with the idea that they don’t need to physically own a piece of content, rather they can own it in the cloud. Indeed, they are becoming much more comfortable with the idea that information and the things they own are cloud based. So for example, there is our Roxio CinemaNow service, where movies are delivered in a manner that is similar to e-mail. With any device, once you enter your password and your name, you can see your e-mail. Similarly with Roxio CinemaNow, you have the ability to view the movies you bought or rented once you have entered your name and password. It’s that simple. Wherever you go and whatever device you log into, you will have access to the content of your choosing. I think that five or six years ago, people would not have been comfortable with this. Now it’s clear, based on the attach rate and user traction in movies that are bought and sold, there is a trend in this direction.

TWST: What are the greatest opportunities for Sonic over the next two or three years?

Mr. Habiger: Our greatest opportunity is to participate in a very meaningful way in this new format of electronic distribution of movies, and we are in a unique position to do so. We are in a lead position from a technical standpoint, and we’re well poised to capture a large chunk of that $56 billion market annually with the transition from the physical disc format to electronic. As the company that powers both the playback ecosystem – that is, on the PC, Mac and Android applications – as well as the ingestion – the movie files’ compression and the service provider – there’s a big opportunity for us. We are a back-end provider, similar to Oracle. We are the company that’s delivering all the technology, but we also manage the assets. So we actually have the rights from the studios linked to our technology, which is then sold through a facing brand like DELL, TiVo, Nintendo, Best Buy, Blockbuster – all of those have a storefront, but they’re not software technology companies. They don’t have the 400 software engineers that we have at any given moment working on these projects and back-end infrastructure. So we have invested quite a lot over the last four to five years in building out that ecosystem, and we expect that the transition from the physical disc to the electronic format will take place sooner rather than later as consumers recognize it as a more compelling way to consume content.

Yeah I think NFLX has the upper hand for now in streaming, but that can change real fast. The competition has only just begun. It’s going to come down to hardware support really.
