Lost in the “gangsploitation” genre of the early-mid 1990’s, including Boyz n the Hood (1991) and Menace II Society (1993), was New Jersey Drive (1995). New Jersey Drive, unlike the aforementioned marquee films of that time based in South Central Los Angeles, is set in downtown Newark, New Jersey, the unofficial car theft capital of the world.
The mixture of gritty drama and dark comedy with an east coast wit make this a hidden gem in an otherwise wildly popular genre from the 1990’s.

Trivia: Centennial HS of Compton is the birth place of the bloods.
You can guess the school’s mascot colors.
If you cross the street (north), it’s an open invitation to become a victim.

Wow. seriously man haha. I remember catching this flick on EQIX or something couple years back. It’s not bad, really highlights how insane car thefts were back then (maybe still are?).
Coming from Connecticut I used to run an office in Linden and the only time I’ve feared for my life is when I got lost in Newark with no GPS.
Thanks Chess. Big fan of the Chess Cinemas, always a great place to check for movie ideas. This post does need re-categorizing, though.
