One thing I don’t understand is why an uptrend becoming “too obvious” should weaken it. After all, if more and more people are looking to buy the dip, wouldn’t that perpetuate the uptrend?

Over the long run, you are correct that bull market reinforce themselves to the upside with more participation. Short-term, though, as we have seen, there is usually an initial shake.
