Perhaps one of the least-known great films from the no-nonsense 1990’s, Fresh (1994) features a street tough kid named Michael (or “Fresh” as he’s known), who decides he no longer wants to be part of the street drug culture he finds himself in, inside the housing projects where he lives. He uses his chess skills to figure a way to get out. Compared to other inner city films from the 1990’s, Fresh is properly understated, more subtle, and pensive. The story develops naturally, and it allows the talented cast to make it a special film. Fresh also features two of my favorite all-time actors in Giancarlo Esposito and Samuel L. Jackson.
